“Some shouted one thing and some another. Since he couldn’t find out the truth in all the uproar and confusion, he ordered that Paul be taken to the fortress.”
Acts 21:34 (NLT)
The commander only wanted the truth. Paul had been beaten in the street, the commander had stepped in, and now he was asking a simple question: Who is this man, and what has he done? But the crowd could not give him a clear answer. Some shouted one thing, some shouted another, and there was no truth in all the uproar and confusion.
That same scene shows up in Acts 19. A crowd in Ephesus is shouting in an amphitheater, but most of them do not even know why they are there. Accusation had produced a mob, and because there was no truth, the uproar could not be silenced. When our lives are fed by accusation and lies instead of the truth of God, confusion does not just surround us, it starts leading us.
So if you wake up and step into your day feeling surrounded by noise, chaos, competing thoughts, and confusion, maybe the invitation is not to shout louder. Maybe the invitation is to get quiet with the Lord. Go back to your prayer closet. Sit in a quiet car. Walk a quiet path. Read, listen, and know God’s Word. Put His truth in you, and then live by it.
Jesus said we will know the truth, and the truth will set us free. His truth reminds us who we are, why we are here, and who we belong to. There is no truth in uproar. So today, do you need to escape the confusion and get into a quiet place with the Lord? Or have you been in that quiet place reliably, and now need to help bring somebody else out of the chaos? Maybe the Lord is asking you to bring them to the truth too: our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Whichever side you are on, I pray you will obey the Lord and do what He asks of you today.
