Made Plain

“For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.”

Romans 1:20 (NLT)

Paul shows us why God is angry at sin. His wrath is not merely a response to the sin we see on the surface. It reaches the root of our sin: we have suppressed the truth. We all have a deep knowledge of God because He has made Himself plain to us. Ever since the creation of the world, we have been able to look at the earth and the sky and know that there is a Creator.

Creation is beautiful, detailed, complex, and incomprehensible. Through everything God has made, we clearly see His invisible qualities, which are His eternal power and divine nature. These are parts of Him we cannot put on paper, even though we try. God has made everything around us, and He made us. But He has also made Himself so plain that we have no excuse for not knowing Him.

We knew there was a God, yet we would not worship Him or give Him thanks. Instead, we tried to determine what God was like and discovered foolish ideas that brought our minds into darkness. We claimed to be wise, yet revealed our foolishness by putting God in a box, defining Him, and worshiping a version of Him we created. Instead of standing in awe of the invisible, incomprehensible, and vast God, we reduced Him to images of things God created.

I pray that we would notice again what God has shown us through His creation. May we stop suppressing the truth and trying to define God through our doctrines and religion. If we have created or worshiped any physical or invisible idols, may we surrender them today. May we recognize the price Jesus paid to save us from our foolishness and see again how big the God we serve is, and how deeply He loves us, through the beauty of His creation.
