Lay Hands and Let Go

“So after more fasting and prayer, the men laid their hands on them and sent them on their way.”

‭‭Acts ‭13‬:‭3‬ (‭NLT‬‬)

The story in Acts now shifts back to the church in Antioch. We learn there are many prophets and teachers in this church, a result of their growth and an ingredient for their growth. These men had gathered to worship the Lord and they had been fasting. At some point, Holy Spirit grabs the microphone and says: “dedicate Barnabas and Saul for the special work I have for them.” In other words, release them to go and fulfill the important work I have called them to.

So when they were done fasting and praying, these prophets and teachers laid hands on Barnabas and Saul. These men are sent as missionaries to do the work God had appointed them by Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gave the direction for their ministry, not man. I also believe Holy Spirit imparted the gift necessary for their ministry when hands were laid on them, not man.

The church in Antioch was asked to release two men that had been critical for the growth and strength of the church. From a natural, worldly standpoint it would have made more sense that they stayed. But no, God said go. When we set time apart in our schedule to meet with the Lord, he shows up, he gives us special instruction, and he gives us direction, even when it’s uncomfortable. These prophets and teachers not only hear what the Holy Spirit says, they obey immediately. They do not tarry.

Today, I pray that we would worship and fast and listen to the direction of Holy Spirit. I pray that we would obey what Holy Spirit says. I pray that we would re-engage in our ministry of laying hands on fellow believers so the Holy Spirit can impart gifts to them, heal them, and meet their needs. And I pray that we would recognize the prophets and teachers from the past that have helped fuel our ministry today, like Barnabas and Saul in this story. Write a thank you note, text somebody, or pick up the phone and send some encouragement today. Be a Barnabas.
