“Suddenly, there was a bright light in the cell, and an angel of the Lord stood before Peter. The angel struck him on the side to awaken him and said, “Quick! Get up!” And the chains fell off his wrists.”
Acts 12:7 (NLT)
Peter was asleep in prison the night before trial—two chains on his wrists, soldiers on both sides, other guards at the gate. Herod wanted him on public trial because there was something in Peter he couldn’t control—power that comes from a real walk with Jesus. But while Peter was chained up, the church was prayed up. And then—suddenly—God showed up. A bright light filled the cell, and an angel struck Peter awake and said, “Quick! Get up!”
And Acts 12:7 gives us a line we can easily skip past: the chains fell off his wrists. The miracle didn’t start with Peter breaking free—it started with Peter responding. He didn’t negotiate with the angel. He didn’t argue with the Word of God. He got up. He obeyed. And once he rose to what God said, what had held him couldn’t hold him anymore.
That’s the invitation for us. When God speaks—by His Word, His Spirit, an angel, or godly counsel—faith doesn’t stay seated. Faith gets up and moves forward. The question isn’t, “Are the chains real?” The question is, “Do I trust God or the chains?” And when Peter followed the angel, he walked past guard posts and through a big ol’ gate that opened “all by itself”—no human effort—because God can open what the enemy locked.
Some of us are living surrounded—by fear, doubt, shame, anxiety, worry, lack. It can feel like there are guards stationed all around your life and iron gates keeping you where you are. But God is still saying, “Get up. Follow Me.” Don’t have faith in the chains. Have faith in God. Rise to His Word—watch what falls off you, then watch what opens for you.
