Where Refreshment Flows

“And the next day we touched at Sidon. And Julius courteously entreated Paul, and gave him liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself.”

Acts‬ ‭27‬:‭3‬ ‭(KJV‬‬)

Paul has set sail for Italy and is entrusted to Julius, a centurion. At their first stop in Sidon, Paul asks for a favor: freedom to go unto his friends and be refreshed. Julius is gracious and generous, allowing Paul to visit believers who could care for him and provide for his needs. But Paul did not stumble on some friends. He knew they were in Sidon, and he asked to go to them.

Considering all the Roman officials agreed Paul had done nothing wrong and Julius was granting him favors, I highly doubt Paul had any physical needs. I believe Paul had spiritual needs. He needed Godly nourishment. He needed the fellowship and encouragement of other believers. Maybe he needed to be prayed for, talk about the things of the Lord without being chastised, or worship with fellow believers. Paul was not refreshed by a nap, a good meal, or an adventure, but by going unto his friends.

We see this rhythm of refreshment through fellowship in Acts 2:42–47. People connected around the table, prayed for one another, encouraged one another, loved one another, taught one another, fed one another, and worshiped with one another. As they lived this rhythm of fellowship, the church grew and flourished. They served and evangelized with one another. There was a lot of refreshment going on between fellow believers in the early Church.

Today, you may not be on a journey to Rome, but there are other believers around you whom you can go unto and be refreshed by. Don’t get so weary trying to meet your physical needs that you neglect your spiritual ones. Pray that the Lord will reveal those people you can fellowship with. Take one small step and reach out to somebody. Try to be that refreshment for others. Some seasons we’re giving, and some seasons we’re receiving refreshment. But it’s when we remain connected that the refreshment of fellowship will flow in our lives.
