The Next Step

“I asked, ‘What should I do, Lord?’ And the Lord told me, ‘Get up and go into Damascus, and there you will be told everything you are to do.’”

‭‭Acts‬ ‭22‬:‭10‬ ‭(NLT‬‬)

Saul does not meet Jesus on the road to Damascus and immediately hand Him a plan to bless. He meets Jesus, recognizes Him as Lord, and asks, “What should I do?” That question is surrender. After everything Saul had done to persecute Christians and stop people from believing in Jesus, this is a total life change. He does not try to lead the Lord. He asks for instruction.

And Jesus gives it: get up and go into Damascus. There you will be told everything you are to do. This is the simplicity of following the Way: meet Jesus, talk to Jesus, listen to Jesus, and then follow Jesus. Do what He says. God’s Word is still a lamp to our feet and a light for our path. A lamp does not light the whole road at once. It simply lights the next decision, day by day, step by step, and moment by moment.

That means faith often looks like taking the step God has already lit, before we can see everything after it. We take that step not because we know exactly how it will work out, but because we trust the One speaking. We believe that when we get to the next step, God will show us the following one. We are not going to get halfway down the path and be abandoned by Him.

But Acts 22 reminds us Saul did not walk that road alone. Verse 11 says his companions led him by the hand into Damascus. Saul still had to obey, but he had to partner with God and with the people God put next to him. So today, ask the Lord what you should do. Let Him light up the next step. Say yes to Him, and grab the hands of the people who are supposed to walk it out with you.
