God’s One Requirement

“Jesus told them, ‘This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.’”

John 6:29 (NLT)

The crowd that chased Jesus across the lake was still hungry—but not just for food. They wanted another miracle, another sign. Jesus exposed their motives: they were following Him for what He could give, not for who He was. He told them to stop working for things that perish and instead spend their energy seeking the eternal life that only He can give.

So often, we fall into the same trap—seeking the fruit instead of the Vine. We chase results, provision, or purpose while forgetting that Jesus Himself is the bread of life. When we believe in Him and stay connected, He produces the fruit. We receive satisfaction, not striving.

Jesus said this is the only work God requires: to believe in Him. Not to perform, not to prove, not to strive—but to trust. When we believe, we abide. And when we abide, His Spirit empowers us to do every other good work.

The disciples learned this truth by experience. Jesus didn’t always walk beside them physically, but He was always watching over them. In the same way, our job is not to row harder or run ahead, but to remain in faith. When we stay with Jesus, He supplies what we need. The fruit comes from faith, not effort. The hunger ends when we believe.
