Written in Heaven

“Jesus also did many other things. If they were all written down, I suppose the whole world could not contain the books that would be written.”

John 21:25 (NLT)

This is the final devotion in the book of John for Just Abide Daily, and it feels significant to pause here. I’ve been in this book since October, and walking through John slowly has taught me how to dissect Scripture with patience and drawn me into a deeper love for the Word of God. John shows us who Jesus is better than any other Gospel, and my hope has been that these devotions have helped you know Jesus more clearly.

John 21:25 tells us that Jesus did many other things, and if every one were written down, the whole world could not contain the books. Another way this is expressed is that even forever would not be enough time for all the books to be written. That thought helps me understand why eternity will be filled with worship, why we will cry out “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty” forever.

The thought the Holy Spirit impressed on my heart is this: every believer is one of those works Jesus did. Our names are written in glory, recorded in the Lamb’s Book of Life, registered in heaven. Jesus’ works are not fully contained on earth, but they are contained in heaven. We are the ultimate work of His ministry. We are the cake, and the miracles are the icing.

The most important fruit of Jesus’ ministry is written in heaven, and it will never be lost. My prayer is that you have been encouraged by the book of John, that you know Jesus more through your reading and listening, and that you’ve been able to slow down and grow deeper in your love for Him. You are not an afterthought in His story. You are one of His works, written in heaven.
