“Jesus replied, ‘If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me.’”
John 21:22 (NLT)
Peter had just been told how his life would end. It wouldn’t be easy. It would cost him everything. And almost immediately, Peter looked sideways. He noticed John nearby and asked the question we all ask at some point: What about him, Lord?
Jesus doesn’t answer Peter’s curiosity—He redirects his focus. It’s not a harsh rebuke. It’s loving clarity. Don’t worry about his race. You have your own. As for you, follow Me.
Jesus had already said it plainly. In Luke 9:23, Jesus said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.”
No one else can carry your cross. Community can encourage you, but obedience is personal.
Comparison always slows discipleship. The more we wonder about someone else’s calling, the more we wander from our own. Watching others follow Jesus is not the same as following Him yourself.
Peter listened. And because he did, the church was built, lives were changed, and the gospel spread. In the same way, there are people God intends to reach through your obedience. Pick up your cross today. Don’t spectate—follow.
