The Spear of Prayer

“Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.”

Ephesians 6:13 (NLT)

God gives us tools all throughout Scripture to thrive until we reach heaven. The armor of God is one of the greatest tools. It isn’t just something we should be talking about in VBS. It isn’t just something we should study. The armor of God is something God gave us to USE.

Every day we engage in a battle when we go into the world. If we want to stand FIRM at the end of the battle, we need to use our armor. Let’s not leave it on this page in Ephesians 6 of our Bible. We should put it ON.

I have learned more about the armor described in this passage and recently discovered the SPEAR of prayer. The Roman armor would have been incomplete without it. The sword referenced would have been more like a dagger, used for close combat. The spear would have been for long range attack—it was thrown. This is what Paul is talking about in Ephesians 6:18. The Holy Spirit helps us pray WHAT we didn’t know we needed to pray and WHEN we didn’t know we needed to pray. It keeps the enemy at a distance. When we pray in the Spirit, we aren’t just defending ourselves—we’re pushing back darkness before it reaches us.

So before you leave the house today, make sure your armor is on and your spear is ready. Let’s practice throwing our spear today and win the war.
