Not Chance, but Presence

“Then they cast lots, and Matthias was selected to become an apostle with the other eleven.”

Acts 1:26 (NLT)

This is not a casual moment in Scripture. This is a critical one. The apostles are replacing Judas. The integrity of the Twelve matters. The witness of the early church matters. And before anything happens, they pray. They don’t rush. They don’t debate. They submit the decision fully to God. When they cast lots, they are not flipping a coin. They are following a practice God Himself had already established and honored throughout the Old Testament. God used lots to publicly confirm Saul as king in 1 Samuel 10. God used lots to expose Achan’s hidden sin in Joshua 7. Again and again, God showed that He could reveal His will through this process. The apostles trusted that history. They trusted God’s sovereignty over the outcome.

But Acts 1 is a threshold moment. This decision happens before Pentecost. Before the Holy Spirit is poured out. And after Acts 2, we never see the apostles cast lots again. Not for leadership. Not for direction. Not for discernment.

Why? Because the primary way God now leads His people is not external—it’s internal. Today, God doesn’t need to speak through chance or circumstance to reveal His will. Holy Spirit lives inside of us. He guides, convicts, redirects, and confirms. He speaks through Scripture, prayer, and obedience. And the more we abide in Him, the more clearly we learn to recognize His voice.

Acts 1 reminds me that God has always been faithful to guide His people. Acts 2 reminds me that He now does it from within.
