“The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.”
John 20:30–31 (NLT)
John closes his Gospel by telling us exactly why he wrote it. Not to catalog every miracle Jesus performed—there were too many for that—but to record the ones that would anchor our faith. These signs were written so that we would continue to believe. Not start believing. Not believe once. But never stop.
That phrase carries the idea of ongoing, settled trust. Full belief means trusting all that Jesus said, even when we haven’t seen it yet. Like Thomas, we often hesitate to act on what God promised because we haven’t watched Him do it before. But Jesus calls blessed those who believe His word and live from it.
If we only believe after we see, we limit what we can experience. But when we abide in Christ, trust His word, and ask according to His will, His life flows through us. The miracles were recorded so we would never not believe—because Jesus did more then, He is doing more now, and He will do more as we trust what is written.
Maybe today you’re struggling to believe because life has worn you down. Scripture reminds us that belief shows up as prayer, not worry. When we stop believing, we stop praying and start carrying what God invited us to give Him. So don’t let go. Keep believing. Jesus is who He said He was, He did what He said He did, and by believing in Him, you have life—now and forever—by the power of His name.
