Is Jesus Enough?

“Jesus replied, ‘Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you?’”

John 14:9 (NLT)

Jesus speaks these words in a moment filled with confusion. Thomas has already asked his question, which led to one of the most quoted verses in Scripture: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Then Philip speaks up—“Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” You can hear the ache in Jesus’ response. Have I been with you all this time, and you still don’t know who I am?

Philip had walked with God. He talked with God. He learned directly from God. He saw miracles no man had ever seen. He had unfiltered access to God in human form for three years. And yet, he still wasn’t fully convinced. There was still something else he needed. I read this and realized—I’m Philip. Lord, if You just do this one more thing, then I’ll be satisfied.

Jesus points Philip back to what is already true. If you’ve seen Me, you’ve seen the Father. Believe who I am. Believe what you’ve seen. At minimum, believe because of the works you’ve already witnessed. That’s where peace comes from—not from the next thing we’re asking God to do for us, but from trusting what He’s already done.

We’ve seen Him provide. We’ve seen Him heal. We’ve seen Him restore. We’ve seen Him save. And still, we ask for something else—thinking it will finally bring contentment. But when you see Jesus, you have seen God. Your salvation is secure. The Spirit lives within you. You already have all that you need.

Until Jesus is enough for you, nothing will ever be enough. Today, I pray I’m not like Philip. I pray I would be satisfied with who God has already revealed Himself to be—and live from that place of peace.
