“And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet.”
John 13:14 (NLT)
Jesus didn’t rush past the moment. He served first, then He sat down to teach. He got lower than His disciples, dirtier than them, and loved them in the most practical way possible. Before a single command was given, care was demonstrated. Jesus showed them He was for them long before He told them what to do.
After washing their feet, Jesus asked, “Do you know what I was doing?” You call Me Teacher and Lord—and you’re right. And if the Lord and Teacher is willing to serve, then serving isn’t beneath you either. Leadership in the kingdom doesn’t talk its way forward; it stoops its way forward.
Jesus makes it plain: “I have given you an example to follow.” Do as I have done. The church is good at talking—what we should do, could do, plan to do. But Jesus calls us into doing. Obedience looks like action. Love looks like service. Blessing follows those who do these things.
So whose feet need washing today? In your home, your church, your workplace, your neighborhood, even the grocery store—who needs help? What would it look like to slow down, let go of pride or schedule, and get your hands a little dirty? Jesus didn’t just speak love. He showed it. Let’s get to washing.
