“They said to each other, ‘Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?’”
Luke 24:32 (NLT)
The two disciples on the road to Emmaus didn’t realize they were walking with Jesus—until their hearts burned as He explained the Scriptures. That’s what happens when the Holy Spirit breathes on God’s Word.
Later in this chapter, Jesus tells the rest of the disciples to wait in the city until they’re “clothed with power from heaven.” That power helps us understand Scripture and ignites a fire in our hearts—as if Jesus is walking right beside us.
Throughout Luke 24, we see a theme: even after the resurrection, many still didn’t believe. But once the Spirit came, everything changed. In verse 45, Jesus opened the minds of the disciples to understand what the Scriptures said.
Jesus still wants to walk with us. He still opens minds. He still speaks through the Word. And when we yield to the Spirit, He does it again. There isn’t a gap in our understanding—unless we ignore the Holy Spirit. When we listen to the Holy Spirit, we won’t just read Scripture—we’ll burn with passion for it.
