“The soldiers who were about to interrogate Paul quickly withdrew when they heard he was a Roman citizen, and the commander was frightened because he had ordered him bound and whipped.”
Acts 22:29 (NLT)
Paul was about to be punished for a crime he had not committed. The commander wanted answers, the crowd wanted him dead, and Paul was already tied down to be whipped. But before the beating began, Paul spoke up. He did not defend himself with anger. He simply told them who he was: a Roman citizen with rights they had no authority to violate.
Paul was still a citizen before he ever said a word. His identity was already true, but if he stayed silent, they would have hurt him anyway. When he spoke up and told his accusers whose he was, they withdrew. The commander was frightened because he realized he had bound someone he had no authority to punish. I wonder how often we forget that same truth spiritually. We are children of the Most High God and the enemy is under our feet because of Jesus. Yet when the accuser comes to bring pain, fear, shame, or torment, we sometimes forget the authority Jesus has given us. We fail to use the power Jesus was whipped, crucified, and resurrected to give us.
The accuser has no right to rule over what Christ has already redeemed. But just like Paul, we have to speak up. We have to pray and exercise the authority Jesus has given us. We have to stand on the Word of God and say, “No, I am a child of God. I belong to Jesus. I will not agree with the accusation. I will trust the power of God, the Spirit of God, and the authority of Jesus over anything the enemy tries to send at me.”
So today, is there any accusation from the enemy that you have been silently agreeing with, even though Jesus has already paid for your freedom? The authority Jesus gave us is real, but we have to use it. Know the Word by reading it. Stand on the Word by believing it and speaking it in faith. Rest in the Word by praying instead of worrying. The demons will tremble at the authority Jesus gave you, but you have to speak up and use it in faith.
