Don’t Stand in God’s Way

“And since God gave these Gentiles the same gift he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to stand in God’s way?””

‭‭Acts ‭11‬:‭17‬ (‭NLT‬‬)

Peter had the message, but God moved faster than Peter’s understanding. Peter says it plainly: “as I began to speak,” Holy Spirit fell on them. God didn’t wait for a polished sermon or full explanation. Like water cascading down rocks in a waterfall, He met a room with no disbelief, no hindrances, and no worry about anything besides the message. They just had hunger for God.

And the evidence that Holy Spirit fell wasn’t vague. Peter watched these Gentiles speak in tongues—the same sign these Jewish believers experienced when they were filled with Holy Spirit. That made it indisputable: the Gentiles had received Holy Spirit too. God was showing that the Gentiles believed in the Lord Jesus Christ by giving them the same gift of Holy Spirit He gave the Jews.

Then verse 16 lands with weight. Peter remembers Jesus’ words: John baptized with water, but you will be baptized—be immersed—in Holy Spirit. Jesus immerses people in Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues was the initial evidence of that baptism in this story. Tongues weren’t something to shame—they were the proof that Jesus had met the Gentiles and that God was saving who He had sent his Son to save. Tongues were the sign these Gentiles now had eternal life.

Put yourself in the story. Who are the “Gentiles” to you—people, churches, testimonies, or gifts you’ve quietly rejected? If we shame, ignore, or rebuke what God gives in an encounter with Him, we’re not just critiquing people—we’re opposing God. Ask Holy Spirit to teach you how to love all of God’s sheep, and to celebrate what only Jesus can give: repentance that leads to eternal life.
