But, God

“But an angel of the Lord came at night, opened the gates of the jail, and brought them out. Then he told them,”

Acts ‭5‬:‭19‬ ‭(NLT)‬‬

After the crowds keep coming to Jesus for healing, opposition rises fast. The enemy doesn’t applaud kingdom momentum—he resists it. In Acts 5, that resistance shows up through the high council, and Luke tells us what’s underneath it: jealousy.

They weren’t just threatened by the message—they were threatened by the movement. The growing following challenged their position, their way of life, and their livelihood. So they arrest the apostles and lock them up. Political power tries to cage spiritual power, and you can almost hear the enemy saying, “It’s over.”

But God sends an angel at night, opens the gates, and brings them out—not to hide, but to obey. The instruction is clear: don’t hesitate; go right back to the temple and give the people this message of life. The good news. Keep doing what you were doing. And the apostles do. They enter at the first opportunity and begin teaching—because God had sent the people to receive what he instructed the apostles to give.

Here’s what encourages me today: God still writes “But God” stories. He can pull us out of whatever jail we’re in—bondage, addiction, sickness, sin, fear—and when he does, it’s so we can walk back into the life he called us to with startling obedience. So trust that he can, and believe that he wants to. Ask him to break your chains—and then obey in a way that startles the enemy.
