“So although Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, he stayed where he was for the next two days.”
John 11:6 (NLT)
Jesus wasn’t lazy and He wasn’t late. While Lazarus was sick, Jesus stayed at the Jordan, and John 10 shows many believed in Him there. He had to be present for their salvation. The math also shows Lazarus likely died the same day Jesus heard the request. Even if Jesus left immediately, He wouldn’t have arrived in time.
Waiting allowed more saving where Jesus was and more saving where He was going. By the time He reached Bethany, the fourth day made the miracle irrefutable—exactly what He prophesied in verse 4 and explained in verse 15. The delay built the disciples’ faith and prepared them for resurrection power.
Jesus also faced danger in Judea. Thomas’ words in verse 16 reveal how unreasonable this return looked. Yet Jesus went anyway—ready to display His power. Maybe those extra days gave Him more time with the Father before the trial ahead. Delay is not punishment; it often sets the stage for God’s glory. Trust the timing of Jesus. He is never late.
