He Has Not Deserted Me

“And the one who sent me is with me—he has not deserted me. For I always do what pleases him.”

John 8:29 (NLT)

In this passage Jesus is urgently pleading with the Jewish leaders to see who He really is. They were respected, educated men—but they were still blind. Their minds stayed fixed on earthly things while Jesus spoke of heavenly things. Because they didn’t believe He was the “I AM,” Jesus told them plainly: you will die in your sins. They belonged to the world, so they couldn’t hear the One who came from above.

Jesus could have condemned them… He could have listed everything they were doing wrong. But instead, He revealed the heart of the Father. He said nothing except what God told Him to say. And then He said the line that finally broke through: The One who sent Me is with Me. He has not deserted Me.

That was new for them. They lived in a system where every mistake required a sacrifice. The idea that God could stay with a man—continually—was completely foreign. But when Jesus said it, something awakened in them. If God stayed with Jesus… what would that mean for them?

Jesus modeled the life we are now invited to live. He abided in the Father. He stayed surrendered. He only moved at God’s command. And the Father stayed with Him—always. This is the same promise Jesus extends to His followers in John 15. He lived it first so we could live it now.
