“For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. In fact, the Father will show him how to do even greater works than healing this man. Then you will truly be astonished.”
John 5:20 (NLT)
The Jewish leaders were furious because Jesus healed a man on the Sabbath, breaking their traditions. But the Sabbath wasn’t made for God’s benefit—it was made for ours. Jesus revealed that the heart of the Sabbath was always about restoration, not restriction. He exposed how man-made rules had smothered compassion and showed that true rest is found in doing the Father’s will.
Jesus explained that He only does what He sees the Father doing. God loved His Son and showed Him everything—including even greater works than healing. The greater work Jesus hinted at was raising the dead and giving life to anyone He chooses. Eternal life begins the moment we believe in Him—it’s done, complete, and already ours.
If Jesus said He would do greater works than healing, and later told His followers that “anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works” (John 14:12, NLT), then why do we expect less? Healing wasn’t the finish line—it was the starting point. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in us.
When we pray for others, we should expect the miraculous. Jesus gave us His name, His power, and His Spirit. God’s will is that we bear fruit and display His glory through greater works. Don’t play it safe—believe, pray, and watch God move.
