Fuel the Flame

“Fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you. For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”

2 Timothy 1:6–7 (NLT)

Paul urged Timothy to pour fuel on the gift of God in his life. A spiritual gift is like a flame—if left unattended, it will fade. Fear and timidity try to smother it, but those don’t come from God. His Spirit produces power, love, and self-control.

Timothy’s readiness wasn’t just from Paul’s mentorship. His grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice passed down a living faith that prepared him for ministry. Notice that Paul doesn’t mention Timothy’s father in this heritage of faith. Since only his mother and grandmother are highlighted, it’s likely his father wasn’t a believer. That’s why Paul stepped in like a spiritual father, encouraging Timothy and fanning his calling into flame.

This reminds us that faith is not only personal but generational. Passing it on prepares the next generation to carry the flame. And when we stir up the gifts God placed in us, we aren’t left on our own—we are empowered by the Spirit.

So don’t hide your gift or leave it on the shelf. Put gas on it. Watch it burn brighter. Use it boldly, knowing the Spirit of God in you is greater than any fear that rises against you.
