Training That Lasts

“Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come. This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it.”

1 Timothy 4:8–9 (NLT)

Paul isn’t dismissing exercise—he’s reminding us where the greater value lies. Physical training strengthens the body for a season, but spiritual training strengthens the soul for eternity. That’s why time in prayer and scripture will always outweigh hours at the gym.

In the verses before this, Paul warns of people who trade truth for deception, even forbidding marriage or certain foods. But he reminds us that all the food God created is good and is made holy by the Word of God and prayer when we receive it with thanksgiving. Righteousness doesn’t come from appearances or restrictions—it comes from relationship with Jesus.

This verse is a personal reminder that my quiet time with the Lord is not optional. Missing a workout might cost me a little strength, but missing time with the Lord costs me eternal growth. If I choose physical goals over spiritual growth, I’m training for what fades instead of what lasts forever.

So take care of your body, but guard your priorities. Training in godliness builds a legacy beyond this life. And when you choose godliness over appearances, you’re not just training yourself—you’re shaping the salvation of those who hear you.
